6 Ways to be THE BEST team player at work

1. Commit to your team’s goals and objectives

 

Being part of a team takes buy-in from all the team members. In order to be successful everyone must agree to support the goal and objectives. Refrain from giving the team leader and other team members a difficult time for no reason. Instead, offer helpful solutions and ways to get the job done. This will show that you are committed and you are concerned about every team member’s success.

 

2. Be a willing team player and do your part

 

Committing is only the first step. Now you have to do your part. Follow through is key here. If the team has entrusted you with a task-complete it. Make a habit of turning in quality work only. The quality of your work is a reflection on how you feel about the work and your team. Your team will be able to tell when you do not care about them or the task(s) they have given you.

 

3.Lead the team when you should

 

With leadership comes great responsibility. As a leader, you are to blame when your team rises and when they fall- no pressure. Avoiding leadership roles in a team setting is not always the best answer. Be the dependable person that steps up to the plate and helps get the job done.

 

4.Follow the leader when you should

 

Following takes discipline, especially when you do not always agree with what the leadership says. Learning to follow doesn’t mean that you blindly go along with the plans, it means that you have bought-into the objective and you are doing your part to get the job done. Understand that just because you choose to follow the team leadership- does not make you inferior or less than the leadership.

 

5.Encourage other teammates

 

Kindness goes a long way. Avoid being overly critical and if you see that a teammate is struggling, offer to help. No one likes to be criticized, nagged or belittled. Remember the golden rule: Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you.

 

6.Take pride in your team

 

Implementing the previous points will show that you take pride in the company, in your team and in your work! Thinking ahead and going above and beyond what is expected of you shows that you are appreciative of the opportunity to work on the team. Offering to stay late, cleaning up the work space, connecting with team members are all ways to take pride in your team
